MANILA, Philippines — Opening up its exciting slate of events and stage performances to marvel in, Newport World Resorts sends out an invitation on what to expect as love, once again, is in the air and this only calls for yet another gathering of pure, unadulterated Filipino talent. As one can only expect, the voices of OPM singing champions assemble in a night of unbelievable harmony and storytelling through music.
Happening on February 14, Valentine’s Day, the grand musical celebration aptly called Champions of the Heart takes over the Marriott Grand Ballroom, Newport World Resorts, starting at 8 PM.
Described as the biggest Valentine’s show this year, it brings together icons of OPM and winners of the world’s biggest singing competitions—five of the country’s most acclaimed singers, Martin Nievera, Jed Madela, Jona, Klarisse de Guzman, off her recent talked about television and film appearances, along with international champion, Sofronio Vasquez—into a one-night concert of classic love songs, standout solo performances, and special collaborations.

Leading the night is Nievera, the “Concert King”, whose romantic ballads and unparalleled stage presence have made him an enduring icon of OPM. Vasquez, the first Filipino and first Asian artist to win The Voice USA, whose international success has brought Filipino talent to the global stage, comes in for a homecoming of sorts.
Also taking center stage is Madela, who stands out as a power belter, renowned for his countertenor range and global competition triumphs that launched his career. Audiences will also be treated to performances by Jona, the first grand champion of Pinoy Pop Superstar and one of today’s most respected divas. Completing the lineup is de Guzman, touted as the Philippines’ rising Soul Diva, whose loved performances, not to mention, her recent major concert milestones have solidified her status as a premier musician and live performer.

“Why ‘Champions of the Heart’? [In] love, sometimes we win, sometimes we lose. But if we lose, it doesn’t mean that we’re not champions. We’re still champions because we grow as human beings,” show director John Pratts highlights when talking about the concert’s format and what to expect, collecting a roster of top-tier performers telling everything about love on one stage.
“Usually I’m in a show every Valentine’s. This is the first time I’m a part of a show where there’s more than two people,” Nievera says. “We know each other so well, so [I know] that the blending and the gelling will become so natural.”
A Valentine show regular and an unmistakable icon on concert performances and the industry as a whole. Nievera shares wisdom on his unending education as an artist, even as he stood his ground as stalwart in Philippine entertainment.

He opens up, “I’ve been the Concert King since the ’80s. [If anything], that only means I can do whatever the hell I want. Children’s parties, funerals, weddings, singing with singers who are younger as me, who may not have as many albums as me, or concerts as me. I don’t make people level up to me.”
He goes on, “But I am in this business to learn, and to share. The moment that Sofronio became the champion of The Voice, I didn’t even know him. But I immediately wanted to be his friend because I knew the industry wants a piece of him and because I believe so much of his talent, I made sure he stays on planet earth. [Because] everybody will blow you up to make you believe that you’re bigger than you are—until you are not.”
He furthers, “No matter what I do, I’ve learned to embrace where I came from. Never forget where you came from, because that’s the core. That’s what’s going to take you to forever. That’s your purpose in life.”
