MANILA, Philippines —Following an announcement of taking the stage across Asia in support of Tori Kelly, young singer-songwriter, Maisy Kay makes her way to Manila, just this August on the heels of the recent track release of “Technicolor Honeymoon”. Prior to joining Kelly in the Manila leg of the former’s Purple Skies World Tour, she sits down in Novotel Manila Araneta City to talk career inspirations, creative process, and a game plan to forge a vibrant road ahead on her musical journey.
Moving from a small countryside in England to the heart of Los Angeles, Maisy Kay is touted as a musician that blends “nostalgic dance and pop music” magnified through her enchanting lyricism and overall creative inspiration that seeps seamlessly in every track. On her most recent track drop, detailing “seeing colors more vibrantly for the first time” she shares, “I had the title ‘Technicolor Honeymoon’ in my head. It was one of those songs that I wrote with a title first, and I didn’t have a song yet. I just knew I loved the name and so I sat down and 20 minutes later, the song is ready.”
The single, with its accompanying dreamy music video was released last May off of her EP “Wonderlust: The Dawn”. This then quickly climbed to #1 on the Pop Charts and #5 on the overall iTunes Charts.
“I wrote [the song] to talk about a really exciting whirlwind romance that I’ve been experiencing, sort of, for the first time as an adult, which was really exciting and really new to me. I’ve never felt that way in my life before. So, it wasn’t even really a choice to write the song. It sort of just happened, there is a need to write about it because it was so overwhelmingly positive,” she discloses. The song, as she opens, “Technicolor Honeymoon” feels like a “vacation that is so colorful and vibrant and filled with love.”
The beautiful, vibrant world woven within the song is, in many ways, a reflection of her worldview as an artist and an individual. She says, “I love fantasy in all capacities. I love to read fiction and fantasy books, I love video games, especially fantasy games, open world games, that sort of stuff. So, it’s definitely a big part of my personality and I’ve sort of get a bit more animalistic nature side of things. I have a lot of butterflies in my branding and my music, which I love.”
Emerging to create her distinctive dent in the music industry, she has since collaborated with powerhouses in music from Timbaland, Tiësto, Rodney “Darkchild” Jerkins, and Max Martin protégé Lukas “LULOU” Loules. As of this writing, biggest record remains to be “The Storm” with 33.4M Spotify streams, amassing over 320M views on YouTube.
Performing “Technicolor Honeymoon” on the stage among some of her most celebrated tracks off her young body of work is a transformative experience in her artistry. As she shares, joining Kelly was a welcome development she didn’t know would happen but knew she needed. She shares, “Basically, I didn’t really know it was happening until I got the call and I got the offer, which I believe was in April or May. It’s funny cause at the time, the same day that I got the call, I was feeling really disheartened about not having a tour to go on and feeling like I wouldn’t get one for the year.”
At the time of the media conference, she has since stepped on the stages of Shanghai, Taipei, and Singapore with the Grammy winner. She says of the experience, “I haven’t really been anywhere so it’s wonderful seeing all these different cities. it’s been absolutely amazing. The crowds have been wonderful. Tori is so sweet, and so talented. She’s so wonderful. It’s been a really heartwarming experience for me.”
No stranger to touring life, Maisy Kay was part of JVKE’s “What Tour Feels Like” summer tour in venues that dotted across the United States in 2023, giving fans the performance of a lifetime.
Of living on the road for a period of time in support of performers she believes in she has this to say, “I try to have a lot of downtime in between the shows just so I can truly relax and recover. It’s nice that I am good friends with my team and the people I am traveling with, which makes a huge difference if you love who youre with. So, I love going to them. We always chats, they always help ground me. So I think having that social ability with a group of loved ones, even if I don’t have my loved ones at home is really helpful to get me through it all.”
While on the road, the musician is also working on completing an EP that looks to be a continuation of the “Wonderlust: The Dawn”. Set to be released later in the year, she is looking ahead with the new narratives and worlds built in what is to be named “Wonderlust: The Dust”, with hopes of soon collaborating with like-minded artists like Chappell Roan, among others.
