MUNTINLUPA, Philippines — From what was once regarded a niche activity, indoor climbing has quickly become one of the fastest-growing sports among young Filipinos.
Drawn by its combination of fitness, problem-solving, and community, more Gen Z athletes are discovering climbing as a thrilling alternative to traditional workouts. And as the sport grows, so does awareness around something equally important: proper nutrition and climbing education.

At the forefront of this movement is Power Up Alabang, one of the country’s leading climbing gyms, where more recreational climbers are enrolling in the Southeast Asia Climbing Federation (SEACF) Level 1 Certification—a program designed to teach the fundamentals of safe and responsible climbing. The certification covers essential skills including equipment use, belaying, safety checks, partner communication, climbing etiquette, and risk management. Beyond improving technique, it helps climbers become safer and more dependable partners inside the gym.
In support of the growing climbing community, Kenny Rogers Roasters Philippines collaborated with Power Up Alabang for its latest certification course, while aligning the concepts of nutrition and overall wellness in the program. This was highlighted by Kenny’s Healthy Plates as post-workout meals to help fuel participants during the intensive day-long training.
“At Kenny Rogers Roasters, we believe that better nutrition fuels an active lifestyle. Through our partnership with Power Up Alabang, we’re proud to support a community that values health, performance, and continuous growth,” said Rei Felizario, Assistant Marketing Manager of Kenny Rogers Roasters Philippines.

Recovery is a key part of every climbing session. Kenny Rogers Roasters’ Healthy Plates served as the perfect post-workout meal, providing protein, fiber, and iron to help support recovery and replenish energy after intense training.
According to Coach Jao Sauco, SEACF-certified instructor and lead facilitator of the certification program, more climbers are choosing to get certified because they want to contribute to a stronger and safer climbing community.
“Seeing recreational climbers voluntarily invest in certification is one of the strongest indicators of the sport’s growth,” Sauco said. “They’re learning proper systems, improving their skills, and becoming reliable climbing partners. That’s the kind of culture we want to build.”

“As more Filipinos discover climbing, we’re equally intentional about promoting good habits beyond the wall,” said Gretchen Que, Partner and Marketing Director of Power Up Alabang. “Proper nutrition is a key part of an active lifestyle, and Kenny Rogers Roasters helps make healthy post-climb meals more accessible to our community.”
As climbing continues to gain momentum among young Filipinos, initiatives that combine education, wellness, and nutrition are helping shape the future of the sport. For many climbers, earning a certification isn’t just about climbing higher—it’s about becoming a stronger, safer, and more responsible member of the community.
