HONG KONG—Following a year-long wait, Hong Kong musician XTIE is set to be releasing her latest single “Lost in Between” today, an international collaboration with Finnish songwriter Anniina. The collab is a product of the two musicians chance meet up during a K-pop songwriting camp during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021, who have since forged a close partnership.
After their remote collaborations, the two female musicians finally met in-person in Seoul this year, and filmed the music video for “Lost in Between” in the city, featuring a highly creative process inspired by the cinematography of DUNE2, long-time collaborators of XTIE.
This cross-regional collaboration is truly refreshing, with XTIE representing Asia and Anniina hailing from the Nordic region. This partnership not only showcases the exchange and fusion of different cultures, but also brings new voices and perspectives to the music industry.
“Lost in Between” addresses the struggles of underrepresented communities in the music industry, and the challenge of imposter syndrome that they often face. The song explores how insecurities can hinder success, highlighting the internal battles that many musicians face, and aims to give a voice to listeners who struggle with self-doubt, encouraging them to overcome their challenges. With only 4% of music producers in this industry being women, XTIE’s perspective as a female producer is especially poignant.
The track is not XTIE’s first international collaboration. In 2023, she worked with Tomoko Ida, the first Japanese female producer to receive a GRAMMY nomination on her single “New Classic.” As an Asian female creator, XTIE seeks to unite more musicians, and bring new sounds to popular culture.
This latest release also marks XTIE’s return to the Western music scene a year after her debut EP “APOLLO-23”.
“After releasing my debut EP last year, I have been working in secret this year,” shared XTIE. “I have since set up my own label, and participated in multiple festivals and shows across Asia, UK and the USA to promote my new works.”
Most recently, XTIE was also invited to Limoux, a beautiful town near Toulouse in Southern France, to participate in an international songwriting camp organized by the Centre National de la Musique (CNM). The camp brought together songwriters from France, Europe, and around the world. Among the musicians, XTIE was the only Asian selected, collaborating and creating music with international artists from France, Italy, Finland, Poland and more.
Most significantly, XTIE has become a voting member of the Recording Academy for the GRAMMY Awards. Earlier this year, she was invited to attend the 66th GRAMMY Week in Los Angeles and has now joined the GRAMMY voting membership as a producer and songwriter.
Of this major milestone, XTIE said, “Receiving this great news in the final month of my twenties is incredible! I am officially a member of the Recording Academy’s GRAMMY Awards voting committee. Thank you to the secret angels who believed in me and nominated me for this. I am excited to be a part of this community, and will give 200% of my efforts to grow with my peers and make a significant impact in the industry.”
