Yes! You can breathe now! The teen coming-of-age story you didn’t know you need will soon be back in session. It was earlier confirmed by entertainment service, Netflix, that the British hit Sex Education is set to come back with a third season.
The green light came in the form of a streamer that showcased actor, Alistair Petrie, who plays Michael Groff, the morally ambiguous headmaster and father to one of the series’ most beloved character, Adam, played by Connor Swindells.
In a quick recap, Petrie briefly touched on recent events that marked the lives of the show’s central characters, as portrayed in art pieces. Just this January, the Sex Education returned for its second season to much critical and audience acclaim.
The series trails the education of teenager Otis Milburn, played by Asa Butterfield, as he slowly evolve from a sexually-inexperienced misfit to a reluctant “sex guru” who was, in great lengths, influenced by sage advice that came from single parent, and sex-therapist mother, Dr. Jean Milburn (Gillian Anderson).
As he slowly gained notoriety in Moordale High for his expert bedroom and relationship advice, Otis navigates the complexities of adolescent life, with partner-in-crime turned love interest Maeve (Emma Mackey), and best friend Eric (Ncuti Gatwa).
In season 2 begins, he takes on his first romantic relationship with Ola (Patricia Allison), but it was not without its awkward and life-changing complications. Sex Education stars Aimee-Lou Wood, Kedar Williams-Stirling, Tanya Reynolds, among others. The show was helmed by creator Laurie Nunn. In fact, Netflix declares that the series was among its most popular originals, amassing a total of 40 million member views worldwide within the first four weeks of its release.
The series triumphed in its unapologetic, no-non-sense depiction of real life issues that concern the youth–from sexual awakenings, gender identification, and biases, filial and romantic relations, and a handful of sensitive but meticulously-discussed subjects that resonated with its global cult following.
At the end of the now-circulating video, Headmaster Groff, interestingly shows the pièce de résistance–a painting of Eric and Adam. He noted, “I wonder what is in store for these two cherubs? Well, I suppose you’ll have to find out in season 3 won’t you?” Well, as the second season left much to look forward to, Season 3 deems to answer cliffhangers that fans around the globe have been dying to answer. It was reported that production for Season 3 starts this 2020, with a release in 2021.
