It’s that time in the cinematic calendar again as we wait for the golden statues to be handed out to its new rightful owners. The Oscars race is definitely nearing its end as this year’s official nominees have been announced Tuesday, by Andy Serkis and breakout comedienne Tiffany Haddish with the help of several A-listers  Gal Gadot, Salma Hayek, Priyanka Chopra, Rebel Wilson, and Zoe Saldana to name a few, at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills, California.

Guillermo del Torro’s The Shape of Water collected the most nominations at 13, including Best Actress for Sally Hawkins and Best Director, and Best Picture. This is followed by the Winston Churchill historical drama Darkest Hour at 7 nominations, and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri at six.

Several expected frontrunners made the list including Best Actress bets Saoirse Ronan (Lady Bird) and Meryl Streep (The Post). Timothée Chalamet, of Call me by your Name fame made its way to the roster of Best Actor nominees together, but his onscreen partner, Armie Hammer, who was previously nominated at the Globes didn’t score a nod. Chalamet joins early favorites Gary Oldman (Darkest Hour) and Daniel Kaluuya (Get Out). Phantom Thread star Daniel Day Lewis, who reportedly announced retirement from acting last year also scored a nomination in a role that would probably be his last.

After her Golden Globes snub for Best Director, Greta Gerwig gets nominated for Lady Bird while Golden Globes nominees Martin McDonagh (Three Billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri) and yes, Steven Spielberg (The Post), didn’t make the cut. Christopher Nolan, of Inception and The Dark Knight trilogy fame, finally received a nomination for Best Director for his film, Dunkirk.
