PHILIPPINES—Meme culture in the Philippines is not going anywhere. And with the widely-celebrated launch of Korean zombie apocalypse series All Of Us Are Dead on Netflix, it is only fitting to see Filipinos on the Internet share countless memes to cleverly share their collective admiration and love for the show.
Immediately after its premiere, the streaming entertainment service reported All of Us Are Dead soaring to the TOP 10 list (Non-English TV List) in 91 countries worldwide. Even before its release, the Korean series has already piqued enormous interest from global audiences even just for its trailer, recording more than 16 million views only in English-speaking countries.
This positive reception propelled the title to take the world by storm in rewriting K-zombie history. As early as February 2nd, Netflix recorded approximately 124.79 million hours viewed within three days of its release, taking over the top spot on the TOP 10 (Non-English TV) list in across 29 countries. The series then ranked in the Top 10 among an additional 62 countries, including the USA, Canada, Brazil, Greece, Russia, Spain, Italy, cementing the title starting a new global phenomenon.
With this continuing interest, in the Philippines, inspired by very Pinoy high-school humor from fans, Netflix fittingly unveiled meme billboards nationwide. This twist on traditional billboards are peppered across the country in locations like Cebu, Davao, Laguna, and of course, EDSA.
